Choosing a Shelving System

Deciding on a storage system for your home or business can be somewhat of a daunting task. How high? How wide? How many levels? What capacity do I need per level?. Well here is a brief guide to the shelving systems available to you........

Firstly, YOU DO NOT NEED SHELVING !

You need extra storage space, to get things off the floor, to store more in the existing area, to organise and make more efficient the storage of products or even archives, paintings etc.

Lets begin with cheap shelving units. These can be found in many of the high street or out of town DIY sheds, whether you are after shelving for sheds, garage shelving units or some workshop shelving you could find them instore, (you wont get much advice on the type of shelving best for you, but you will find a small selection of cheap shelving there). They also have a wide range of wall mounted shelving or the Brand "Spur shelving" as it is known in the trade.

The most common brand or phrase associated with shelving is of course Dexion Shelving. It is to the shelving industry what "hoover" is in the vacuum cleaner market. No longer manufactured in the UK the name Dexion still lives on through European owned storage equipment manufacturers.

"I need some Dexion" now commonly means "I need some Racking or Shelving". With this statement comes a problem of its own. As there are so many Industrial shelving systems in the market place today its hard to ensure that you get quality and value for money with so many low cost imported shelving products, so initially try looking for a uk shelving system manufacturer.

Shelving and Racking systems come in hundreds of different combinations and types, plastic shelving for food grade applications, stainless steel shelving for high care areas, including hospitals etc, galvanised shelving or chrome shelving for use in damp areas or chill and cold stores.

Whilst bolted shelving (also called British Standard Shelving or Delta Edge Shelving) is still very much available, the majority of systems are bolt free or clip together shelving. These, unlike Bolted systems, are easier and quicker to install, as well as easier to relocate and modify shelf levels as your businesses storage needs change or develop.

Other systems, such as Office shelving units and archive shelving, are low cost ways of storing your archives and day to day records on site, without the need for expensive off site storage or archiving. Mobile shelving systems also play a big part in storing archives and records, and save vast amounts of floor space when installed efficiently.

Whilst in the office environment, you may have a mail room. That is where pigeon hole shelving creates a valuable method of sorting the days post ready for distribution.
