Protection of your buidling columns, not only saves you paying out for repairing them, but also prevents possible injury to forklift truck operators, damage to stock and materials handling equipment.
There are a number of different column protection solutions, the more common armco type barriers, that bolt to the floor are very strong, but in the long term could present you with costly repair bills for your concrete floor. You see every time forklifts hit them, they are putting stress on the floor fixings, and that in turn puts stress on the concrete within which the fixing is fixed. The concrete over time will break up and, hey presto floor repair bill heads your way.
There are a number of other ways to protect your columns, for example strap some solid timber to them ! You may think thats a bit of a crude way of doing it, but, a well know do it yourself 'shed' cable ties lumps of timber to the front of their racking uprights - absolutely useless and a waste of time and effort. The timber splinters, and deteriorates and then you have to replace it. By far the most long term cost effective solution for protection of your columns, is the polyethylene column protectors, rotational moulded 'drums' for want of a better word, that are formed with indents within them to help absorb the impact of the mhe (materials handling equipment), without putting stress on the floor and without putting force into the column from the collision. Installation is quick and easy, seconds to fit one to a column! If you need to inspect the column simply take it off and have a look.
